Anyone watching smu beatdown by UN-R?
Nevada more than smu can handle.
This from CBSSPORTS: SMU is a dark horse to compete for the ACC, and the Mustangs will certainly want to make an impression in their first game of the year. Simply put, Nevada should be overmatched in this one -- even if it has home-field advantage. Choate has quite the rebuild ahead of him. This could be looked at as Year 0 for the Wolf Pack. Lashlee, meanwhile, enters his third year as SMU's coach and returns a lot of production off of 2023's 11-win team. This should be a nice tune-up game for SMU before it gets into the meat of its 2024 slate. Pick: SMU -25.5
8 mins left. NV 24 smu 21 (smu just scored and made 2 pt conversion). It was 24 - 13 a minute ago. It's a beat down when you're up by 3 and expected to lose by 25.

so after the TD and 2 pt conversion. NV player signals fair catch on ensuing kickoff. He's standing in his own endzone (so why fair catch, just let it bounce). He muffs the catch and fumbles at 1-yd line (sounds eerily like a recent Cotton Bowl game). Two plays later, smu gets safety on NV (still sounds familiar). With 5 mins left, it's 24 - 23 NV. smu couldn't do anything with the ball after a nice return on kickoff.

1:18 left and smu throws 30+ yd td pass to 6'4" 240# tight end. misses on 2-pt conversion.
29 - 24 smu
I haven't seen any team fold this badly in such a short time since, maybe, days of Scelfo.

If smu plays like this for the rest of the year, I see them only winning 3 games, total.

SMU opponent was Nevada (Reno) not UNLV (Vegas). Might want to edit thread title.
Meanwhile could SMU do damage in ACC? Sure. Win your bad games against bad teams and you can have a great record by playing well when beating the good teams.
What all ACC results yesterday suggests to me is a two or three loss ACC Champion might not earn a CFP bye.

I’ve noticed a few people that still slip the Lafayette in with UL
Tulane Greenbackers

Re: Anyone watching smu beatdown by vegas?
We played them in the Potato Bowl a few years ago and in the regular season back in the 90s. They've always just been "Nevada", for decades. I don't recall you ever mentioning this before... Why are you suddenly conflating their use of "Nevada" as offensive to UNLV in the way "Louisiana" offends us? UNLV was huge in basketball in the 90s and yet Nevada was Nevada then, and I don't think Tark's Runnin' Rebels cared.
Re: Anyone watching smu beatdown by vegas?
This. UNLV doesn't care and each has had their own branding as "Nevada" and "UNLV" for decades. Bluntly, there's an argument that "UNLV" is the more recognizable name of the two, largely due to Tark's run in the 90's.PeteRasche wrote: ↑Sun Aug 25, 2024 9:24 pmWe played them in the Potato Bowl a few years ago and in the regular season back in the 90s. Griefing UL for being called Louisiana is petty. They are the largest school in the University of Louisiana system with the most programs. UL has twice as many students as UNO and ULM. Its far more of a thorn in LSUs side than ours by any measure. LSU hates the "Louisiana" tag. I guess there are those who want to support LSU. I am not one.

As for me, I graduated from the true, original University of Louisiana, and it irks me that nobody acknowledges that fact.
