A group of Florida boosters have pulled together money to cover the expense of firing coach Billy Napier, two people with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.

He's gone, it's just a matter of when. Florida is still looking for a full time president and I'm betting the school does not want the current AD, strickland, to make a third football hire. They may want to get that situation figured first and then let the new person make the call.

With Trent Dilfer basically signing his own pink slip, is there a chance they bring Vincent back and would he even want to go there? That’s probably a moot point because he’s going to get better offers which brings me to my next moot question. If Sumrall leaves after next season, would Vincent be interested in coming to Tulane if a better offer hasn’t come his way? He may do it just to stick it to UAB a couple more times!

I saw an interesting comment that firing losing coaches will generally not happen until November or early December from what we have seen recently. Why? Transfer portal opens as soon as a coach is fired. Players with four games or less to date can leave and redshirt.

Maybe Dilfer and Napier have another month to turn it around? Saved by the portal! (It’s a joke. They gone.)

That’s a good point. Florida was winning 3-0 at the half.

Upset Alert!! Florida now up 10-0 last I saw.

First one of the year not counting Andersen at Utah st. Chip Patterson on cover 3 mentioned that the new playoff timing may have an impact on slowing down mid-season firings.

I heard them talking about that. I think it was playoff and portal related reasons.

Oklahoma fired their OC today.

I don’t know if Houston boosters would go for that. Would have been an easier hire before he became USM’s HC.

I dunno, his ability as OC at Tulane literally got him a HC job. Seemed like most Tulane fans liked what he did and were sad to see him go but recognized he was destined to climb the ladder. Some guys are better as coordinators. From his point of view, he's going to make waaaay more as a P4 OC than as a HC at a step-down-from-USM program. And Houston's offense has been one of the worst in FBS so you have to think the OC is getting replaced (Willie was never slow on that trigger).

Warner did not play yesterday after Tulane injury as Rice’s offense was incredibly anemic under the backup QB losing to UConn

I guess it is still toxic to HC careers to lose to Tulane. It used to be “How can we lose to those guys?” Now it’s “Why we can’t be as good as those guys?”

Rice has the bucks to build decent programs but it hasn’t had the will in decades. It has even let its baseball slip away.

I SWAG NIL could be its savior like SMU, i just don’t see the will

Speaking of bucks, Chronicle reported Bloomgren’s salary as about $980,000.

Wilie is making $4+ million and Sumrall is around $3 (??SWAG).

We will see if Rice moves its next coach to a market salary. No insights nor even a guess on that. Bloomgren had been an assistant at Stanford so does Rice try to hire a successful FCS/D2 HC as a change? This job is such a mess, it will be real hard to flip an FBS one but all TBD.

If Rice wants someone with a chance to clean up their mess, they'll have to show a commitment that they haven't...well, ever. They could do so, but I doubt they will.

And that sort of thing is a big reason why the AAC is having the issues it is. It's not the top few teams, but the bottom dwellers who are unwilling to do what is necessary to improve.

Amazing that two AAC coaches have been fired and neither are named Dilfer.

I’d guess that they have been negotiating with his agent for some weeks, hoping that he’ll budge enough to make a buyout cheaper, all the while hoping that something happens to make him fireable for cause.

It has to be that the buyout figure is tough to swallow. If it were doable they’d have canned him already.

I'm imagining people teasing and harassing him around the office just hoping his temper will get the best of him and he'll punch someone.

And considering the people in charge of the money are in the University of Alabama system, there's probably not the urgency there would be if it were an independent, private school.

There are about 50 teams doing worse than Rice this year, and back-to-back bowls before this season. I don't think it was his fault.
