College Football Imperialism

Post by PeteRasche »

So I don't do Reddit but ran across this on social media. You get to claim the territory of every team you beat until you lose, and every team those teams beat.

Oklahoma has beaten only one team on the road so even if KSU upsets them this weekend, we'd gain very little, and USM has nothing to give. In fact, there's not much for us left to gain for the rest of our season as most of the AAC has been claimed by non-AAC teams. ECU is the only one with much appreciable real estate.

Regardless, I like all the green areas with Angry Waves!

Glad you posted this Pete. I've been following this for a few years but this is the first year we've had any territory beyond a couple weeks in. One correction, we won't get any more territory from Kansas St. If they beat OU, they will get back on the map by taking OUs territory, but it doesn't get credited to us.

The folks that put this together also do this for fcs and D2. They may do it for the other levels but I haven't seen those. It's also not uncommon to see fcs teams with territory in the fbs map that never gets taken once the crossover games quit happening.

Ah, so you only get the territory that the team you beat already had. Got it.

Scanning the AAC schedule, this coming weekend is really the only chance for the AAC to significantly grow its footprint. Cincinnati against Indiana (currently greatest landholder in the country even if it's low population areas), Tulsa against Ole Miss, SMU against TCU. And oddly (because of Rice beating McNeese and ULL), Houston could claim half of Louisiana this weekend with a win over Rice, then we could claim it the following, and we'd have most of the state (the remainder held by Florida State and Alabama).

This is a fun idea, surprised I've not seen it in prior years.

Speaking of K State. They are 12.5 pt underdogs to Oklahoma.

After losing all our land to those dirty Mustard Buzzards, we are back on the map! Houston beat Rice, who beat ULL the week before so we own most of Southwest Louisiana. By virtue of ULL's earlier win over EMU, we also own some lovely lakeside property on Lake Erie. ECU is off the map, so no chance to gain territory this weekend.

Stinks that there could be some nice big swaths of Angry Waves if not for that stupid USM debacle.

Yep Southeastern beat Incarnate Word a couple of weeks ago and they grabbed Nevada's territories. Basically every year an FCS team or two retains land the whole time because they beat an FBS squad and only play FCS teams the rest of the way. It may change hands among FCS teams, but it never goes back to an FBS team.

,
Everybody starts the year with the counties closest to their school (so we have the parts the Louisiana and Mississippi closer to us than LSU or USM).

Week one happens. If you beat a team with territory, you take their land. If you lose, your opponent takes your land. If you are playing an FCS team and win, you gain no territory.

Week 2 happens. If you beat a team that lost their territory in week one, you gain no territory. If you beat a team with territory, you gain their land. If you own territory and lose, even to a team with no territory, you lose all your land.

Lather, rinse, repeat. So for us through 3 weeks, we picked up land in Massachusetts (Umass)UMass, none for Alcorn, land in Kansas (k state). Losing to USM gave all our land to them. Since Houston held land from beating Rice, our win over them restored us to being land holders at least this week.

How did we get that little part of the thumb of Michigan's mitten?

But then So Miss beat us, so why didn't we lose that to them (and then on to whoever beat them, etc)?

Edit: ULL beat eastern michigan, and houston beat ULL. that makes sense now

We won't have the chance to win anymore ground until the UCF game at earliest. That will only be the case if UCF beats Cinci on Oct. 29. If Cinci wins, then we probably won't have the chance to win any ground until the finale against Cinci. Of course, we could lose our territory with a loss any week.

At one point Cincinnati had the most physical acreage in the country just because they beat a couple of teams (and teams who'd beaten teams) that were in less-populated midwestern areas with bigger footprint; they still have a large chunk in the middle of the country. If UCF beats them and we beat UCF, we would have a pretty good swath of land.

There's gonna be a lot of orange in this week's map...

Here's this week's map. Everything owned by Troy was also at one point ours. I just hope we hold our coastline long enough to play for some more territory.
