To God's ears...

It does gives us hope. D'Onofrio was a terrible DC at Miami. Let's hope he's learned nothing new.

He is the 2nd most stubborn man alive (Al Golden is #1), so he won't. He will play 1988 Penn State defense, which is slow, read and react defense in 2017. He was horrible at Miami with NFL talent. He'll have worse (but still good) talent at UH. It'll be a trainw wreck.

Nothing you've written I disagree with.

I'm really surprised that Golden didn't succeed at UM. Maybe he was so stubborn that he did not get rid of assistants like D'Onofrio.

UH has made some amazing hires for the football HC. It's time they missed on one. Like it's time we hit on one.

Golden was horrible though. He could have gotten rid of bad assistants, but ultimately it was his system they were running (D'Noforio runs it too, but it's Golden's from Al Groh at UVA).

D'Noforio is also an a-hole who the players and local high school coaches hated. All you have to do is listen to Miami defensive players from last spring, their first under Manny Diaz. It was like kids in a candy store.

In 2015 Miami's defense was #69 in total defense and #77 in scoring defense, #105 in TFL and #70 in sacks. Miami lost their top tackler due to suspension for the season. They lost their pre season all ACC DE due to suspension for the year. They lost their all-ACC CB to the NFL and he starts for the Steelers. They lost 2 other LB to graduation. They started 3 true freshman LBs this year, the only team in the nation to do that, and they were #20 in total defense, #12 in scoring defense, #22 in sacks, #5 in TFL and #19 in defensive TDs under Manny Diaz.

That's how bad of a DC he was.

Major is not an amazing hire - just the easy and less costly one.

The two prior to him weren't so bad, though....

Tony Levine? UH's hires in these new good old days in order are: Briles, Sumlin, Levine, Herman, and The Major.

2/3 in making bowls while there, although I'll admit I had forgotten about him. Either way, other than el Majorito, still a list we would much rather have than our coaches over that span....

He's the only one on that list to have lost to Tulane!

Not technically true. Both Applewhite and Herman lost to Tulane as OCs at Rice (2006 and 2008).

Major is not cut from the same mold as the previous recent coaches at UofH. He might win in the next couple of years with Herman's recruits, but as he moves along he'll have more difficulty getting to .500.

If the hire wasn't enough, per twitter, Chris Scelfo has been hired as Houston OL coach.

They fired him in November but his legacy lives on. Houston DBs play 5 yards deep in the end zone with Army on the 1. Easy score.

ESPN announcers are puzzled why they’re playing so deep vs Army. Still gave up a long pass.

If this statement turns out to be as accurate as the title of the OP, we will be in good shape!
“We will expect success in all endeavors and be prepared to assess and hold ourselves accountable when we aren't successful. Tulane is a top 40 academic institution and it should expect nothing less from its athletic department.” --Troy Dannen 11.5.16
