An Ohio school district celebrated its high school graduation season this year with 222 valedictorians.
That's right. Two hundred and twenty-two valedictorians.
Roughly 20 percent of the Dublin, Ohio's three high schools' seniors graduated with the title of valedictorian, according to The Columbus Dispatch.

I'm not saying there is never a situation where you might consider co-valedictorians, but it shouldn't be typical, and even then, it should stop around.....say.....two? Not two hundred and twenty two

And people wonder why college psychiatrists are overwhelmed with depressed students who can't handle not succeeding because they are being challenged for the first time in their lives and mommy and daddy aren't able to protect them.

Who says college is challenging them? In the consumer driven university world of today, challenging them isn't exactly encouragedPeteRasche wrote: And people wonder why college psychiatrists are overwhelmed with depressed students who can't handle not succeeding because they are being challenged for the first time in their lives and mommy and daddy aren't able to protect them.

Congratulations to all those young scholars!
Unlike some of you cynics, I think what we have here is a case of a lot of bright, hard working kids who excelled equally. In fact I know this. Here's a picture of some of these fine youngsters from back in elementary school:

Dublin is my hometown. In my day we had only one valedictorian per high school (there are 3 schools now). To receive that honor you needed to avoid taking classes, such as Art, that were not offered at the AP or honor level. The reason being that an A in Art would factor in as a 4, whereas an A in an honor class would factor in as a 5. It didn't make sense to punish kids for being in marching band and reward kids for taking extra study halls instead. To circumvent this problem, the school district decided that anyone with a GPA higher than 4.1 will be considered a valedictorian. This must make for incredibly long graduation ceremonies if each ceremony has 75 valedictories.
Perhaps a better solution would be to allow kids to take elective courses as pass/fail or choose to have A's in these classes not factor into their GPA.

The competition for valedictorian can be fierce; one of my patients was battling to be valedictorian with a student who quit the band so he could get one more AP course in to embellish his GPA (didn't work, my patient was valedictorian).
I think that they had 3-4 students who had essentially identical GPA's at the top of the heap at our local high school. With 500+ students in the graduating class, there won't be much GPA separation between students who are number 50 and number 70.

Re: It's like the anti-Highlander
And I'll tell you, it doesn't really matter. It certainly does not matter to the top 50 universities who had a scintilla GPA higher in a given HS class.
It might matter to the helicopter parents who might be seeking justification for spending exhorbitant amounts on years of private school tuition and extras. Yes, good grades are a factor in college admissions but not even a determining one. The simple fact is there are over 36,000 US high schools alone, of which about 10,000 are private, and that does not include a number of non-US applicants to top tier US universities. Every Ivy could fill every incoming freshman slot (22,000+ for the Class of 2021) with only valedictorians and there would still be over 14,000 left out and that does not include top students from abroad and only assumes one valedictorian per high school. We know that doesn't happen. Add to that the fact that all valedictorians are not created equal. The valedictorian from Bronx Science or similar would carry more weight than most other places.
So, throw the kid a party and hang a nice banner and be deservedly proud, but keep it in perspective. No one outside of your family cares who won out over a fourth decimal place GPA. The colleges don't.
