Too conservative in play calling or number of points scored?

From 2016 - 2019 (4 yrs) UCLA has had losing seasons. Wonder if the OC was too conservative.
Just stated what the article said about the issue being him being too conservative in play calling which led to low scoring out put. He was long gone before 2016.
I read the article. Thanks for finding it. It doesn't say much else. I'd take conservative play calling all day long if we go undefeated. Just wanted to point out ucla hasn't been too good as of late. COVID season, 2020, I think they were 3-4. So, maybe OC was not conservative, so he stays, but they did win many games.
UCLA hasn’t been too good of late?

True but the Blue Sissies were good enough to give Coach Scooby O a prepaid $18 million vacation.

UCLA was really good offensively in 2005. Then their best player (MJD) and QB (Olson) graduated and they dropped off in 2006. It's always easy to blame the OC so they said he was too conservative and fired him. Then, with (presumably) a less conservative play caller, they got worse on offense in 2007. Perhaps (as is usually the case) their problems had more to do with the personnel than the play calls.

D-1 does not have anything like a monopoly on good coaches.

He had a D-1 OC job immediately after UCLA, at D-1 FCS member Montana State for three years before taking the UCM HC position.

I thought D1 includes both FBS and FCS. D1A and D1AA are not NCAA regulatory terms anymore. Correct?

It does but the fact is FBS Is the higher division and FCS is the lower division and he never got hired back at the FBS level after getting fired from UCLA. But you knew that. The bottom line is that this clearly wasn’t a first choice hire and not impressive on the face of it. We all are hoping he rises to the challenge and shows he belongs at this level.

Again let’s follow the science. Does the new OC have D1 position experience at Two D1 programs or not?

Yes or no?

If the speculation is accurate, Coach Atkins was the first choice but FSU made him OC there first.

Do we know that for sure? There was heavy speculation that it was someone from one of those teams because of the wait but I never heard any actual names surface other than those that fans pieced together based on those two schools staffs’ availability.

Right. Just as Atkins was speculation. But yeah all that time passed because he was the first and only choice.
