The worst possible move. It will push SMU to the MWC, it will make the new AAC worse than the Sun Belt in short order. The only way I would EVER consider this if I were a decision maker at a current AAC school would be if ESPN put it in writing that the per school payout would increase over the current deal. You think that's gonna happen?

We will still be middle of the pack but now in a worse conference. Yay!!

Increase, or, heck, I'd take it staying the same. I'm guessing Mr. Aresco was hit by ESPN with a very harsh reality of how devalued the AAC is without the leaving three. No way he takes those teams unless the landscape is extremely bleak - bleaker than any of us imagined.long green wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 6:54 pmThe only way I would EVER consider this if I were a decision maker at a current AAC school would be if ESPN put it in writing that the per school payout would increase over the current deal.

Awful. And we have nobody to blame but ourselves. If we gave a crap ad a school anytime in the last 25 years we would've had a shot at being an expansion candidate.
I cannot understand why we didn't at least go after a couple of top sun belt teams. Why north Texas when we already have smu? Why fau when we already have usf?
This absolutely sucks

This move is bleaker than any of us imagined. Nothing is worse than this. Good God, any choice of six from the remaining CUSA programs is better than this. The only question is how were we talked out of adding ODU.PeteRasche wrote: ↑Mon Oct 18, 2021 6:57 pmIncrease, or, heck, I'd take it staying the same. As for the SBC schools, ESPN happened. They don't televise CUSA. They probably suggested this move which is why Aresco either has got something in writing protecting the payout or he has tertiary syphilis. It's the latter.

Just awful.
Who the heck was asking for the 3 Texas schools?
What AAC Pres wanted this?

I would have guessed a monkey would have typed Hamlet before this. Reporting could be wrong but I doubt it.
DoesESPN just want inventory? MAC already ownsTuesday night football.

Re: Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTSA
The athletic is reporting that this is a defensive move to keep the mountain west out of Texas, since they threatened expansion and that's the most logical expansion point. The league office is also in Texas so that plays a role
Sorry, but if the mwc wants north Texas, utep and Rice, let them have them. If we need to relocate the league office, so be it.
This is an absolute joke of a move. We just went from pushing the big boys in a strong league to being the laughing stock of college football

Re: Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTSA
Scott Cowen will have his revenge, in this life or the next. We might as well drop to d3 and see if we can play Emory and sewanee
Re: Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTSA
Heck it's Cowen who got us into the AAC (after trying to put us in D3 8 or so years earlier).
9 or so years ago when C-USA lost the Memphis, SMU and Houston, Cowen tried to engineer a MWC merger. When that failed (because of C-USA, not the MWC), C-USA expanded with a slate of teams similar to this expansion (including UTSA, UNT and FAU).
Cowen recognized the impending disaster, and immediately started working to get us the hell out that mess and somehow got us into the Big East.
It was his finest moment as Pres. Perhaps his only fine moment, but a fine moment it was.
Now we are back to where we were, if not worse.
Can Fitts get us out of this mess? Does he understand that it is a mess?

I don’t think he cares too much as long as graduation rates are up. The board of directors are the ones that need to remind him of it’s importance. He probably sees having Rice as a peer to be a positive.

The difference then was school presidents and AAU/academics and such still mattered. Now it's nothing but how much worth your brand brings to a TV contract.
It's only a matter of time before Memphis is in the Big 12 and SMU is in the MWC and we can look at our conference and sigh and pretend Bob Toledo is planting flowers outside Wilson.
