Mark Hamilton has it all
Apologies if this was mentioned here before by someone else...
he made it to the bigs, albeit briefly, now he's going to be a doctor. Dang. Way to go, Hammy.

Thanks, lg. Great article. Always liked MH. Believe he was our first player from Episcopal High School in Houston. To bad the author didn't add that Dr. Bobby Brown played one season of ball and got his MD at Tulane.

Re: Mark Hamilton has it all
only problem was he got time with the Cards. nice to see and a reminder that at tulane, most of our jocks are intelligent students.
Re: Mark Hamilton has it all
I would hazard a guess that there are not a lot of division 1 universities where more scholarship athletes in the big three sports (football, basketball and baseball) have gone on to MD's or JD's than Tulane. There were starters from the late 70's who ended up in Medical school- Roch Hontas, plus a lineman (sorry, cannot recall his name). I think Paul Thompson got his JD, if I recall (I might be wrong on this one).
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?
Re: Mark Hamilton has it all
From the 1969 class, Howard Moore and Jim Wallace are MDs and Nick Pizzolatto, John Snell and Ernie Parker received JDs. Basketball player Terry Habig is a surgeon. We did not win much, but we played with college students.

Jaime Garza a really terrific WR on the Ellender teams has his MD as well. And, as we all know, Roch Hontas too.

Geesh. Ohio State still brags because they had one quarterback in the late 90s (Craig Krenzel) who had a 3.75 GPA in cell biology and planned to go to medical school (before he managed to get drafted into the NFL, and eventually settled on selling insurance). Not trying to knock Krenzel (at all), but like that story is still a big deal among Big 10 fans I know, and he didn't even end up GOING to medical school.

Re: Mark Hamilton has it all
Krenzel was the qb when OSU beat Miami for the national championship in 2002. I remember them making a big deal about the medical school thing back then. Yet when I google Krenzel, the third option on google is "Craig Krenzel major". So it must still be a thing for some people.
Re: Mark Hamilton has it all
A few years ago (it's been a few years since I've even listened to him so this was probably 10 or so ago) Collin Cownerd made one of the 3 or so statements he's ever said that I completely agreed with. He said, (something along the lines of) "There's a correlation between schools that play for championships and their GPAs. The higher the team GPA, the lower the chances that school will play for a championship". I think he was talking about football specifically and I know there are exceptions, but let's be honest, how many of lsu or Alabama's starting 22 would succeed in a Tulane classroom? I'm not saying we have a roster full of Einsteins but our players don't get nearly the "help" those programs get, though Tulane could stand to help a little more and could do so without risking their academic integrity.AO Sig wrote:I would hazard a guess that there are not a lot of division 1 universities where more scholarship athletes in the big three sports (football, basketball and baseball) have gone on to MD's or JD's than Tulane. off topic:
A couple things that I agreed with him on:
1- (this one I still use now) Once he talked a good while about the correlation between winning athletic programs and the boost the academic side sees from it.
2- When Jamarcus Russell was preparing to be a bust in the NFL draft, he mentioned that scouts kept talking about how he can throw 70 yards (or whatever it was) from his knees. Cowherd exclaimed, "So what! In the NFL, when a QB is on his knees, that's called a sack".

AO Sig, the lineman who escapes your name, was Scott Morrell. Also, David Hilton is a DDS. I know there are others just have to sit down & remember them......

Thanks; I could remember his first name, but the last name had escaped me.Billow wrote:AO Sig, the lineman who escapes your name, was Scott Morrell. Also, David Hilton is a DDS. I know there are others just have to sit down & remember them......
